In a recent safety update, Air India recorded a significant rise in technical incidents this January, with events such as engine oil and fuel leaks reaching the highest rate seen in at least 14 months. The airline reported 1.09 technical incidents per 1,000 flights, roughly four times the level logged in December 2024.
According to a company document reviewed by authorities, the carrier logged a total of 23 technical incidents across more than 17,500 domestic and international flights during the month — with 21 of those undergoing formal investigation.
The incidents ranged from fuel and engine oil leaks to flight control and hydraulic warnings, affecting both Airbus and Boeing aircraft within Air India’s operating fleet.
Safety Outlook and Industry Response
The spike in technical events comes as Air India continues efforts to overhaul its operational reliability, following a period of intense scrutiny in the wake of a fatal Boeing 787 crash in June 2025 that killed 260 people. While the industry investigation into that accident continues, analysts note that this recent increase highlights the importance of proactive maintenance and process discipline across large fleets.
In response to the trend, the airline said it has introduced systemic improvements across flight operations, engineering quality, and procedural oversight aimed at reducing future technical occurrences. Measures include expanding critical spare parts inventories and intensifying inspection programs across aircraft types.
Aviation regulators, including oversight bodies in India and abroad, are also reviewing the situation to ensure compliance with international safety standards. In early February, UK aviation authorities asked Air India to explain operations of a Boeing Dreamliner that was grounded over a potentially faulty fuel switch, underscoring continued regulatory attention.
