Ryanair remains one of the most accessible pathways into European airline flying — and in 2026 the airline is actively recruiting across multiple entry routes. Here is everything you need to know about getting hired.
Why Ryanair?
Europe's largest airline by passenger numbers operates over 590 Boeing 737 aircraft to 250+ destinations from approximately 95 bases. For pilots, Ryanair offers something few other airlines can — the undisputed fastest path to Captain in Europe. The upgrade timeline from First Officer to Captain typically runs 3-5 years, significantly faster than most legacy carriers.
Entry Routes
Ryanair offers several pathways depending on your experience level.
The Future Flyer program is the ab-initio route for pilots with zero experience — a full training pathway through partner ATOs including Bartolini, L3Harris and CAE, taking you from zero hours to First Officer.
Gateway 1 is for modular CPL holders who have completed ATPL theory and MCC, requiring 100 hours as Pilot-in-Command (or 70 hours if completed during integrated training).
Direct Entry is for current or recent jet operators who already hold a B737 type rating or equivalent jet experience.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for a Ryanair pilot position you need an EASA ATPL (frozen or full), an EASA Class 1 medical, ICAO English Level 4 minimum, and EU/EEA right to work. The B737 type rating is required but can be obtained after selection through approved training centers at a self-funded cost of approximately €30,000-€35,000.
The Selection Process
Ryanair's recruitment process has four stages.
First is the online application through the Ryanair Pilot Gateway. Second is a full assessment day held at Dublin HQ or a designated center — this includes computer-based aptitude tests covering mathematics, spatial awareness, multi-tasking and instrument comprehension, a group exercise assessing teamwork and communication, a B737 fixed-base simulator evaluation of raw-data flying and instrument procedures, and a structured interview with training captains. Third is the type rating course. Fourth is base training followed by supervised line flying.
Results are communicated within 7 working days after the assessment day.
What Ryanair Interviewers Are Looking For
The technical assessment covers your knowledge of your current or previous aircraft type. The simulator assesses basic handling skills, CRM and flight management. The personal interview is designed to assess whether you will thrive in an environment where hard work and effort are rewarded.
Common interview questions include behavioral scenarios — expect questions about conflict management, time management in aviation, and examples of decision-making under pressure.
Salary in 2026
First Officers at Ryanair earn between €45,000 and €93,000 depending on seniority and base, with sector pay of approximately €23 per hour on top of base salary. Captains typically earn between €100,000 and €175,000, with the ceiling requiring TRE or Line Training Captain supplements.
The roster pattern at most bases is 5 days on, 4 days off. Staff travel benefits include unlimited standby across the Ryanair network.
Base Considerations
Location significantly affects net income. Italian bases offer favorable tax treatment for pilots. Polish and Hungarian bases combine lower tax rates with very low costs of living. German bases currently face headwinds — Ryanair has been cutting capacity at Berlin and Hamburg due to aviation taxes, while expanding in Italy and Morocco.
Preparing for Ryanair Selection
The simulator assessment and technical interview are the stages where most candidates succeed or fail. Strong raw data flying skills, solid B737 systems knowledge and confident CRM performance are non-negotiable.
At Pilotium, our Airline Pilot Interview Preparation program and B737 Technical Systems Mastery program are designed specifically to prepare you for exactly this selection process.
