The Order Book of the Future: What Boeing and Airbus Are Actually Building Next

For a pilot, the aircraft the manufacturers are developing right now are not abstract industry news. They are the flight decks you may sit in, the type ratings that will define your marketability, and the fleet decisions that will shape which airlines are hiring and for what. Understanding the Boeing and Airbus pipelines is genuinely useful career intelligence.
So here is a clear, current picture of what is actually coming — what is close, what is delayed, and what is still years away — as of mid-2026.

Boeing: Finishing What It Started Before Starting Anything New


Boeing's near-term story is not about exciting clean-sheet designs. It is about getting three long-delayed programmes across the certification line under a fundamentally changed regulatory environment.

The 777X (777-9 and 777-8). This is Boeing's new widebody flagship — the successor to the 747 in spirit, and the cornerstone of the future long-haul fleets at Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, Lufthansa, and others. It is a substantial evolution of the 777, with all-new composite wings featuring folding wingtips, the enormous GE9X engines, a wider cabin, and technology borrowed from the 787. The 777-9 seats around 426 passengers; the 777-8 around 395, with very long range.

The programme is also running roughly seven years late. Boeing targeted a first flight of a production-standard 777-9 — the launch aircraft destined for Lufthansa — in April 2026, with certification now aimed at 2027. For the Gulf carriers building their next-generation long-haul fleets around this aircraft, it has been a long and frustrating wait, and the delays have had real knock-on effects on their fleet planning.

The 737 MAX 7 and MAX 10. The smallest and largest members of the MAX family remain in certification limbo that has stretched on for years. The MAX 7 has moved closer with FAA approval of key exemptions, with the MAX 10 expected to follow — though timelines have repeatedly slipped, with some analysts flagging the possibility of the MAX 10 sliding toward 2027. These delays directly affect customers like Southwest (a major MAX 7 operator-to-be) and United (MAX 10), forcing them to adjust fleet renewal strategies.

The common thread is regulatory. Following the 737 MAX groundings and the January 2024 Alaska Airlines door-plug blowout, the FAA has adopted a markedly more stringent, hands-on approach to type certification, and it continues to enforce a production cap on the 737 line. The era of rapid certification is over. Every new variant now carries longer timelines and higher compliance costs — a structural reality the entire industry is having to absorb.

Underlying all of it is Boeing's financial position: long-term debt that has ballooned from around $10 billion before the MAX crisis to over $50 billion today. The cash flow from finally delivering the 737-7, 737-10, and 777X is precisely what Boeing needs to begin paying that down — which is why, for Boeing, the immediate future is about execution and delivery, not invention. Its genuinely new clean-sheet aircraft remains years away.



Airbus: Stretching Its Lead While Plotting the Real Successor


Airbus enters this period from a position of strength, having pulled ahead of Boeing in the narrowbody duopoly — a lead hastened by Boeing's MAX troubles. Its near-term strategy is to extend and exploit its current product line while carefully maturing the technologies for the aircraft that actually matters: the A320neo successor.

The A350F. Airbus's new freighter is entering the competitive large-cargo segment that Boeing has long dominated. Built on the A350 platform, it offers roughly 111 tonnes of payload and around 4,700nm of range, emphasising long range and a lighter composite structure. Its direct rival is Boeing's 777-8F. Airbus has targeted a first flight in 2026 and entry into service in 2027, and the timeline race between the two new freighters has become a genuine talking point — both are positioned to replace ageing 747-400F and older 777 cargo aircraft.

The A321XLR — already here and reshaping the map. Worth restating in this context: the extra-long-range A321XLR is now in service and is the single most significant in-production aircraft for the current market. As covered in our analysis of the XLR's operational debut, it lets carriers fly long, thin routes — including transatlantic — on a single-aisle aircraft, blurring the old line between short-haul narrowbody and long-haul widebody flying. For pilots, it extends the career value of an A320-family rating into genuine long-haul operations.

Possible larger widebody variants. With the Middle East's three big carriers in mind, both manufacturers have been expected to offer stretched flagships — a larger 777 variant from Boeing and a larger A350 variant from Airbus — to add seating capacity for the highest-density long-haul routes.

The A320neo successor — the big one, but not soon. This is the aircraft that will define the next generation of single-aisle flying, the segment that accounts for the bulk of deliveries and profits for both manufacturers. Airbus has been clear about both the ambition and the patience involved. The plan is a next-generation single-aisle aircraft entering service in the second half of the 2030s, targeting a 20–30% fuel-efficiency improvement — described by Airbus as a "major gap, not incremental."

The enabling technologies are in active development: a "Wing of Tomorrow" prototype with lightweight folding composite wings, broader robotic assembly, and advanced composites. The engine is the pacing item — CFM's RISE open-fan demonstrator is central, with Pratt & Whitney developing a next-generation geared turbofan and Rolls-Royce weighing a return to the narrowbody market. Notably, the timeline has been slipping: engine testing that was to begin in 2027 has reportedly moved to 2029, pushing a likely programme launch toward 2031 and entry into service later in the decade.

Running in parallel is Airbus's ZEROe hydrogen effort. The original 2035 hydrogen-aircraft target has been pushed back by years, with the focus now on maturing fuel-cell and combustion technologies and integrated ground testing of propulsion systems later this decade. Hydrogen remains, in Airbus's words, central to its long-term decarbonisation strategy — but it is now firmly a long-term project, not an imminent product.



What This Means for Your Career


Step back from the programme details and the picture has clear implications for any pilot thinking about the next decade.

Narrowbody ratings are getting more valuable, not less. With the A320neo and 737 MAX families remaining the backbone of the fleet for at least another decade — and the A321XLR pushing narrowbodies into long-haul — a current A320 or 737 type rating is a durable, appreciating asset. The clean-sheet replacements are far enough out that today's narrowbody experience will remain central for the foreseeable future.

Widebody flying is concentrating around a few key types. The 777X, the A350 family, and the 787 will define long-haul for the next generation. For pilots eyeing widebody and Gulf-carrier careers, these are the aircraft to watch — and the 777X delays mean the timing of certain widebody hiring waves is tied directly to Boeing's certification progress.

Certification delays shape hiring timing. When a flagship slips by years, so do the fleet plans, route launches, and crew-hiring waves built around it. The Gulf carriers' 777X-dependent expansion plans are a direct example. Pilots tracking specific airlines should track the aircraft those airlines are waiting on.

The truly new aircraft are a 2030s story. Neither manufacturer will field a genuinely clean-sheet single-aisle aircraft until the second half of the 2030s at the earliest. The next ten years belong to refining, stretching, and delivering what already exists. For a pilot, that means stability: the types you train on now will be relevant for a long time.



The Bottom Line


The headline of the Boeing–Airbus pipeline in 2026 is patience. Boeing is fighting to finish and deliver aircraft it launched years ago, under a regulator that no longer rushes. Airbus is extending a strong current line-up while quietly maturing the technology for a successor it has deliberately chosen not to rush either. Genuinely new aircraft — clean-sheet single-aisles, hydrogen propulsion — are real, but they are a story for the 2030s.

For pilots, the practical message is reassuring: the aircraft you fly today, and the ratings you hold, are not about to be made obsolete. The next decade of commercial aviation will be flown, overwhelmingly, on evolved versions of the aircraft already in the sky. Understanding which ones are ascending — the XLR, the 777X, the A350 family — is simply good career navigation.
